Northville, Mich. — The new Southeast Michigan Psychiatric Hospital on Haggerty Road in Northville Township is scheduled to begin accepting patients later this month, expanding state inpatient psychiatric capacity.

The 264-bed, state-run hospital can treat up to 192 adults and 72 youth and adds 54 beds to Michigan state psychiatric system. State officials put the project cost at $383.4 million.

Patients from Walter P. Reuther Psychiatric Hospital in Westland are expected to transfer to the new facility as it opens. The complex sits on the former Hawthorn Center grounds and spans about 406,000 square feet.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said the hospital will create 150 professional health care jobs while expanding access to behavioral health care. Acting MDHHS leaders have described the project as completed on schedule as staff prepare for the first patient admissions.

Hospital leaders say the design emphasizes calm living spaces for both pediatric and adult patients. Northville Township hosts the Haggerty Road campus as the only state-run psychiatric hospital in Michigan that will provide inpatient services to children once admissions begin.
