Michigan Insurance Regulators Urge Early Prep

LANSING, Mich. — Roughly 497,000 Michigan residents who buy health coverage through HealthCare.gov have a few days left before the 2027 shopping season opens, and the state insurance regulator wants them to use that time to get ready.

Michigan’s Department of Insurance and Financial Services says rising premiums make planning more important this year, whether a household plans to switch plans or simply renew what it has. Recent federal changes are driving those higher costs, according to the department.

The window opens Nov. 1, 2026, and closes Jan. 15, 2027. Anyone who wants a plan in force on New Year’s Day has to pick one by Dec. 15. Sign-ups from Dec. 16 through the final deadline take effect Feb. 1.

Department Director Anita Fox advised residents to pull paperwork together early, look over this year’s coverage and try the marketplace preview tool, which lets people compare plans, premiums and subsidies without entering a name.

The checklist is practical: Social Security numbers or immigration papers, a recent tax return or pay stubs to prove income for tax credits, a government ID, details on any current plan and a list of doctors and prescriptions. Regulators also suggest tallying this year’s out-of-pocket costs and specialist visits and thinking about changes ahead, such as a new prescription or a growing family.

The federal marketplace is built for people without job-based coverage. It bars denials for pre-existing conditions and offers income-based subsidies to lower monthly premiums.

Residents should be wary of mail or calls that claim to come from an insurer or the marketplace and confirm them before sharing personal details. Free help from trained navigators and certified application counselors is available through HealthCare.gov or by calling 800-318-2596.
