KALAMAZOO, Mich. — State Sen. Sean McCann of Kalamazoo flipped Michigans 4th Congressional District on Wednesday, ending eight terms for Republican Rep. Bill Huizenga in a race that stayed tight deep into the count.
The call came Wednesday afternoon after overnight returns kept the Southwest Michigan seat unsettled. McCann spoke with reporters in Kalamazoo around 3 p.m., saying he had built a broad districtwide coalition and would travel to Washington this weekend to start the handoff while also planning town halls at home.
Huizenga has held the seat since 2011. McCann, in a victory statement, thanked volunteers and said hard-working families deserve a government that works for them, not only the well-connected. He also thanked Huizenga for years of service to the community.
McCann said high turnout helped Democrats across Southwest Michigan and that he plans to keep visiting local businesses while learning corners of the district he covered less during the campaign. State Rep. Julie Rogers, a Democrat who won the race to succeed McCann in the 19th District state Senate seat, appeared with him and said Democratic gains in the House and a 23-seat Senate majority exceeded what she expected.
The flip is part of a broader Michigan night that also saw Democrats reclaim the state House, expand the Senate majority and elect Jocelyn Benson governor.
