Character

Downtown Northville is characterized by its intact Victorian commercial architecture, walkable scale, and an exceptional density of independent businesses. The Town Square hosts Friday evening summer concerts, and Mill Race Village — a collection of relocated historic buildings on the original mill site — provides a living history museum open to the public. The surrounding residential blocks feature 19th-century homes, giving the neighborhood an authenticity rare in Metro Detroit suburbs.

History

Northville was first settled in 1825, incorporated as a village in 1867, and became a city in 1955. The area's mill economy, anchored by John Miller's original grist mill, shaped its early development. Henry Ford purchased a valve factory here in 1919, and the community has maintained its small-town character throughout Metro Detroit's suburban expansion. The Northville Historic District was recognized for its architectural integrity.
