Northville, MI – Lauren James has made history as the first female Eagle Scout from Troop 903G, marking a significant milestone in her scouting journey. Her achievement was celebrated during a Court of Honor ceremony held on May 9. At 18 years old and a senior at Northville High School, Lauren’s accomplishment represents a leap forward in the integration of girls into the ranks of scouting.
Lauren began her scouting path at the tender age of 5 with Girl Scouts, but inspired by her older brother Andrew’s adventurous tales from his Boy Scout experiences, she sought a different affiliation. When Scouts BSA opened its ranks to girls, she joined Troop 903G at age 13. With a strong interest in activities such as camping and hiking, Lauren found her place in the newly formed girls’ troop, which officially launched during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Within Troop 903G, Lauren quickly stepped into leadership roles, serving three years as the senior patrol leader, one year as the assistant senior patrol leader, and consistently taking on the role of troop guide throughout her scouting career. Her leadership skills were recognized positively by her peers and mentors, notably by Jim Weaver, an assistant scoutmaster, who mentioned her influence on the younger members of the troop.
The integration of girls into the scouting community has reportedly been smooth, with maturity among the boys enhancing the cooperative spirit. Lauren’s personal scouting experiences have included memorable events such as a winter ski trip, which helped her bond with newer members of her troop. In 2023, she received an induction into the Order of the Arrow, symbolizing her commitment and contributions to scouting.
For her Eagle Project, Lauren designed and led the creation of an outdoor sanctuary at the Living and Learning Center in Northville. This project features a pathway, a small garden, and benches for outdoor reflection. Her efforts included fundraising activities that generated over $750, which she donated back to the community, demonstrating her commitment to service.
Although Lauren encountered challenges with motivation during the planning stages of her Eagle Project, she found the construction process to be highly rewarding. Beyond her scouting endeavors, she has been active at Northville High School, participating in a variety of extracurricular activities including the swim and dive team, lacrosse, and the National Honor Society, as well as lifeguarding and camp counseling.
Looking towards the future, Lauren is set to study elementary education at Ohio Wesleyan University. Her enthusiasm for teaching younger Scouts has been a guiding influence in her decision. As a testament to her ongoing commitment to scouting, Lauren plans to undertake a backpacking trek through New Mexico at BSA’s Philmont Scout Ranch after graduation.
Lauren’s mother, Carrie James, expressed great pride in her daughter’s achievements, emphasizing the significant impact this milestone has for their family and the wider community. As Lauren progresses into her next chapter, she intends to continue supporting Troop 903G and inspiring future generations of girls in scouting.
