Maibach has been charged with multiple felonies and is currently in jail pending further investigation.

St. Ignace, Michigan — A high-speed chase ended with the arrest of 27-year-old Jack Maibach from Northville, Michigan, on May 19, 2025. The incident began around 2 p.m. when Emmet County deputies attempted to stop Maibach for speeding near Pellston, Michigan. Instead of complying, Maibach fled, initiating a dangerous pursuit across the Mackinac Bridge.

During the chase, Maibach crashed through a toll booth gate arm as he crossed the bridge, continuing northbound in the southbound lane of I-75. The torrent of chaos prompted the deputy in pursuit to call off the chase due to safety concerns; however, law enforcement agencies in St. Ignace were alerted to be on the lookout for Maibach.

Upon entering St. Ignace, Maibach’s vehicle became disabled near Mackinac Straits Hospital, where he attempted to carjack another vehicle occupied by a woman and her child. The woman managed to escape, driving away as Maibach clung to the outside of her car until he ultimately fell off.

Law enforcement officers, including a St. Ignace police officer and a Michigan State trooper, soon located Maibach on foot in the parking lot of the Hampton Inn. He resisted arrest violently but was taken into custody with the assistance of a Mackinac County deputy and a Sault Tribal Police officer. Maibach is now lodged at the Mackinac County Jail on multiple felony charges, including fleeing and eluding, carjacking, and resisting and obstructing an officer.

In addition to the charges stemming from the carjacking incident, further charges were authorized against Maibach in Emmet County. These include one count of third-degree fleeing a police officer and three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon. The series of events raises substantial concerns about public safety, particularly during high-speed interactions with law enforcement.

The incident is currently under investigation by the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office, which may forward a complaint to the prosecutor’s office for further review. Sheriff Matt Leirstein has emphasized the importance of a coordinated response from multiple law enforcement agencies involved in this high-stakes situation.

The events from this chase highlight the significant dangers posed by reckless driving and his violent attempts to evade authorities. The community of St. Ignace remains on alert as law enforcement continues to address issues related to public safety during high-speed pursuits. The coordination and swift action by police during this incident serve as a reminder of the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in maintaining safety and order on Michigan’s roadways.
