New Community Action Office Opens to Better Serve Local Families

Exciting news for families in our area! Community Action of Orleans & Genesee has just opened the doors to a brand new office location designed to make it easier for local residents to access vital services. The new office, situated at 131 South Main Street in Albion, right behind the popular Main Street Thrifts, Gifts, and More store, is now available for families needing support!

A Convenient Move for Assistance

The relocation from the previous spot at 409 East State Street means a more convenient and accessible location for families in need, especially those who might struggle with transportation. Community Action is all about making life a little easier for everyone, and with this new office, they’re really stepping up their game. To visit the new site, just head to the plaza and enter through the Platt Street entrance.

What’s Available at the New Office?

This new office space will be home to the Emergency Services and Case Management programs, along with the much-needed food pantry that was previously located at the East State Street address. For those after-hours looking for something to eat, don’t worry! The overnight pantry at the former location will still be operational, ensuring that no one has to go hungry at any time of day.

Community Action is here to lend a hand during tough times. Whether families are facing challenges with food security, utility bills, or other financial difficulties, their dedicated staff is ready to help navigate these hurdles. And it’s not just about immediate assistance; they’re involved in programs like the New York Health Equity Reform (NYHER) Program, which helps Medicaid members find out what support they may need regarding housing, nutrition, and transportation. Based on screenings, individuals can even receive free services to enhance their well-being.

Expanding Services to the Community

The CEO of Community Action is deeply involved in the local initiative, co-chairing the governing board of the FLIPA “Social Care Network”. With funding for the NYHER program secured through March 2027, residents can soon expect screenings to be available at all locations, including this brand new office.

For anyone curious about the various services available—like Emergency Services, Case Management, or food assistance—help is just a phone call away. Reach out at (585) 589-5605 or visit their website for more information. Each year, Community Action serves around 5,000 individuals across two counties, providing essential services like food, child care, housing, and transportation to those in need.

Holiday Help and Community Support

As the holiday season approaches, Community Action gears up to support families even more. This year, they received nearly 300 applications, representing a whopping 793 individuals seeking assistance. They are ensuring that 149 children will be receiving toys for Christmas, thanks to generous donations from local organizations. They also provide families with holiday boxes full of food and gifts for children under 18.

To help spread some holiday cheer, a “Giving Tree” is set up at the Main Street Corner Thrift Store, where community members can pick a child’s Christmas wish to fulfill. It’s a beautiful way for everyone to come together and make a difference in the lives of children this holiday season.

Art and Community Collaboration

To celebrate the launch of the new office and foster a sense of community, a stunning mural is being painted by local artist David Burke on the south wall of the Gifts, Thrift and More Store. Funded through a grant from the Statewide Community Regrant Program, this mural aims to promote inclusivity and focus on the spirit of community collaboration that makes this area so special.

In summary, with its new office opening, Community Action of Orleans & Genesee is more ready than ever to support local families, making essential services more accessible. Whether you’re in need of food assistance, case management, or just looking to spread some holiday joy, they’re here to help!
