St. Ignace, Michigan – Jack Maibach, a 27-year-old resident of Northville, was arrested following a high-speed police chase over the Mackinac Bridge on Monday afternoon, May 19. He now faces multiple charges, including carjacking, fleeing and eluding police, and resisting arrest.
The chaotic series of events began when law enforcement officers in Pellston, located approximately 18 miles south of the Mackinac Bridge, noticed Maibach speeding. When officers initiated a traffic stop, he fled the scene, prompting a police chase that would lead to a dramatic conclusion.
As Maibach sped north toward St. Ignace, the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office led the pursuit. Due to escalating safety concerns for both the public and law enforcement, deputies decided to call off the chase but promptly communicated the situation to authorities in Mackinac County, passing along the license plate number of Maibach’s vehicle.
During the pursuit, Maibach exhibited reckless behavior, crashing through the toll booth gate at the Mackinac Bridge and driving against traffic along I-75. His reckless driving finally came to an end when his vehicle became disabled near the Mackinac Straits Hospital on State Street in St. Ignace.
After abandoning his vehicle, Maibach attempted to carjack another vehicle. The vehicle was occupied by a woman and her child, and while Maibach tried to gain control, the woman managed to evade him, driving away with Maibach clinging to the outside of her vehicle. However, he ultimately fell off before he could gain control, allowing her to escape unharmed.
Subsequently, police located Maibach on foot, hiding in the parking lot of the Hampton Inn in St. Ignace. When officers attempted to arrest him, he responded by violently resisting their efforts. Additional law enforcement officers responded to the scene, including deputies from Mackinac County and officers from Sault Tribal Police, to subdue Maibach and safely take him into custody.
Following his arrest, Maibach was lodged in the Mackinac County Jail, where a bond was set at $25,000. He is due to appear in court for his next hearing on June 3.
In addition to the charges in Mackinac County, Maibach faces separate charges in Emmet County. These include one count of third-degree fleeing a police officer and three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, which complicates his legal situation further.
Law enforcement officials from various agencies involved have praised the collaborative efforts that led to the safe resolution of this incident. The coordinated actions between agencies exemplify the commitment to ensuring public safety amid dangerous situations.
This incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with high-speed pursuits and the importance of law enforcement’s efforts to safeguard communities during such events. As the situation develops, local authorities continue to monitor the case as it advances through the judicial system.
