LIVONIA, Mich. — Metro Detroit lost its final Daly Drive-In on Wednesday, when the Livonia burger stand closed for good after 67 years and a farewell crowd big enough to empty its kitchen.
The restaurant, which opened in 1959, stands where Plymouth and Merriman roads meet. The Daly name goes back to a Dearborn Heights stand in 1948, and the chain once ran 19 restaurants around the region before the Livonia site became the only one left.
Word of the planned closing first spread last spring, but the owners did not reveal the exact last day until this week to spare a busy staff. Lines still wrapped around the building Wednesday as regulars came back for burgers, foot-long coneys, shakes and the house Dalyburger Sauce.
The demand pushed staff to change the day on the fly, and the drive-in ran out of food before the end of its last day in business.
