South Lyon’s St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Hosts Third Annual Polish Festival

Polish festival celebration scene.

If you’re in South Lyon, and like Polish food, folk dance, and good old family fun, then you’re in for a treat. St. Joseph’s Catholic Church is hosting its third annual Polish festival – the biggest event of its kind in the area yet. Located on 830 S. Lafayette Street, the church invites everyone to join in the festivities on the 7th and 8th of September.

According to Jim Chuck, Co-Chairman for the festival, there will be activities for everyone, both young and old. One of the highlights? Eating contests! And it’s not just the adults who get to have all the fun. Kids aged 5 through 17 are grouped into two categories and can try their hand (or rather mouth!) at the strawberry shortcake eating contest. The catch? They can’t use their hands! As for the grown-ups, the challenge is to see how many pierogies you can wolf down in ten minutes.

And who can say no to Polish food? From pierogies to kielbasa to delicious desserts, there’s food for every palate. Thirsty? You can wash it all down with Polish or draft beer, or choose from a selection of soft drinks and water.

But let’s not forget the Polish culture itself. Those interested can attend a special Mass on Saturday. Polish bands will play traditional music, and Polka dancers will show off their fancy footwork. The festival will also showcase local artists selling their crafts, including a glass-blowing artisan.

If cars are more your speed, don’t miss the classic car show on Sunday.

This one-of-a-kind Polish Heritage Festival is made possible thanks to the community’s support and the generous sponsorship by local businesses. But it’s not just South Lyon residents turning up – the event has been drawing people from different counties.

The Polish Heritage Festival will run from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. For more information, check out the website of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church at www.stjcc.org
