South Lyon Set to Indulge in Polish Heritage Celebrations
South Lyon is abuzz with excitement as St. Joseph’s Catholic Church is gearing up to host its third annual Polish Heritage Festival this weekend, promising it to be the biggest one yet.
The much-anticipated festival, located at 830 S. Lafayette Street, kicks off on September 7 and ends on September 8. According to the organizers, it’s not just for church-goers, but everyone is invited to join in on the festivities.
According to Jim Chuck, Co-Chairman for the festival, there is a fun-filled schedule planned for both days. Highlighting the itinerary, Chuck said, “Kids, aged between 5 and 17, we’re splitting them into two groups for a good old-fashioned strawberry shortcake eating contest. The rule, though? No hands allowed! For the adults, we’re hosting a contest to see who can scoff down the most pierogies in ten minutes.”
For food enthusiasts, the festival offers a variety of traditional Polish delicacies, ranging from pierogies and kielbasa to mouth-watering desserts. To wash all of that down, you’ll have a choice of Polish and draft beers, refreshing snow cones, sodas, or just plain water.
For those interested, the church will also host a special Mass on Saturday. And if you’re a fan of the arts, you’ll be delighted to know that there will be Polka dancing and live performances by Polish bands. Plus, local artists will showcase and sell their art throughout the festival.
“We even have a glass-blowing demonstration. It’s a unique craft, and the artists will be selling their creations,” added Chuck.
If you love classic cars, you’re in for a treat as a classic car show will feature during the Sunday festivities.
What makes this event extra special is the impressive community involvement and the support of local businesses. As Jim Chuck notes, “The community really supports what we’re doing. It has transformed into a community-wide extravaganza drawing people from different counties.”
The Polish Heritage Festival will open its doors from 1 p.m. and will run until 9 p.m. on Saturday and from 1 p.m. till 6 p.m. on Sunday. For more details, visit the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church’s website.
