Superintendent of Wayne-Westland Schools Resigns Amidst Criticism

In Westland, John Dignan, the Superintendent of Wayne-Westland Community Schools, has opted to resign his position, a decision confirmed by the school district’s Board of Education in a meeting that took place on August 19th. Dignan’s resignation comes in the wake of criticism that he allowed a staggering $28 million budget shortfall in the previous school year.

Jennifer Curry, previously assistant superintendent, has since stepped into the role of acting superintendent. “The terms outlined in the Agreement have been mutually agreed upon by all parties,” stated school board President Bradley Gray. He went on to express his gratitude for Dignan’s contributions to the district.

Dignan, who was appointed in 2020, was placed on administrative leave this past June. Details of the reasons for Dignan’s administrative leave were not immediately available.

Curry has been lauded for swiftly stepping up to fill the leadership vacuum. Gray added, “We also want to express our appreciation to Jennifer Curry, our acting Superintendent. She and her leadership team have been hard at work preparing for another successful school year.”

Acknowledging that the transition may not have been easy, Gray praised the current team’s commitment. “The Wayne-Westland school district continues to move forward under her strong and capable leadership. This team is committed to the mission of ensuring that all students are prepared to be knowledgeable, responsible, contributing members of a global society.”

There is yet no official information on who will permanently take over Dignan’s role. The supervisory resignation comes at a pivotal time with schools preparing for the forthcoming academic year.
