Vibrant Dining Scene in Detroit: New Openings and Closings in July

Detroit dining evolution.

Detroit has seen a plethora of new restaurants and bars opening their doors in July, bringing along flavors from every corner of the world. On the downside, we also witnessed the curtain fall on some dining establishments. With the ledger standing at twelve openings and five closings, it’s been a pretty decent month for the city’s gastronomes. Highlights range from a chic Irish pub presenting tartan wall decor, a family diner catering to everyone’s taste buds, to a Pure Michigan style hangout, turning every soiree into an unforgettable experience.

New Entrants in the City’s Culinary Scene

Firstly, we have Doyles Irish Pub at Saint John’s Resort in Plymouth. This luxury addition to the resort comes well-equipped with a contemporary décor suffused with an Irish vibe, and an outdoor patio featuring games like cornhole and horseshoes. On the menu, you’ll find classic Irish dishes, cleverly produced with an elevated modern twist.

Our second newbie is Maxhari’s Family Restaurant in Brownstown. Showcasing a fantastic array of soups, desserts, and platters to satisfy every palate, this family-owned diner opened its doors mid-July to tremendous applause. They’re proud to call themselves a family restaurant and offer menu options designed specifically for children and seniors.

Riding on the dessert bandwagon is the Peach Cobbler Factory in Detroit. It finally made its long-awaited debut, satisfying sugar cravings with a mouth-watering array of cinnamon rolls, cobbler shakes, Belgian waffles, and more. To complement these goodies, they offer variations of milk including chocolate and strawberry.

Last but not least, let’s welcome Scout in Ferndale. Housed in a cozy, up-north Michigan vibed location, the spot formerly known as M Brew reopened as Scout. The establishment’s soft-opening phase has already initiated, with a full opening expected soon.

Some Unfortunate Goodbyes

Despite the flurry of new establishments, we also had to bid adieu to some well-loved spots. Among them, Bandit Tavern and Hideaway said a quick goodbye due to currently unfavorable market conditions. Buca di Beppo, a popular American-Italian food chain is leaving us, sharing a similar fate to Red Lobster and Boston Market which have recently closed their doors.

The Detroit Institute of Bagels also shut down, following a previous closure in 2020. Half of the staff quit following a change in ownership, leading to a temporary halt in services. Lastly, The Morrie, a fun and casual music-themed bar, and the tiki bar Smuggler’s Run wrapped up their run, announcing closures due to the current economic environment.

Wrapping up, it’s fascinating to see the buzzing activity in Detroit’s food scene. Each closing is sad, but the unveiling of the new spots brings excitement and fills the void. Here’s looking forward to more epicurean delights in the coming months.
