Heroic Actions Prevent Tragedy in South Lyon Fire

South Lyon witnessed a narrow escape from disaster early Monday morning thanks to the quick thinking of one of its newest police officers. Officer Angela Bay, who was sworn in just a few months ago, sprang into action around 1:20 a.m. on October 21 when she noticed heavy smoke billowing over East Lake Street.

Police Chief Doug Baaki reported that flames were visible on a balcony adjacent to the popular Corner Social restaurant, where the owner, Mike Carano, resides in an apartment above. It is believed the fire may have started from a discarded cigar in a burn pit.

Upon spotting the fire, Officer Bay immediately called in the South Lyon Fire Department. She and Police Sgt. John Tomanek rushed upstairs to wake Carano, ensuring he made it out safely. Fortunately, Carano was unharmed.

Despite their efforts with fire extinguishers, Baaki noted that the officers were unable to contain the flames, which were growing rapidly. Fire Chief Joey Thorington described it as a significant blaze that was “starting to burn through the roof” when firefighters arrived. He emphasized, “It could have been a lot, lot worse. It’s fortunate she saw the fire when she did; the entire building could have been gone.”

Thanks to the swift action of the firefighters, the blaze was brought under control with minimal damage to the inside of the building. The investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing.

Chief Baaki expressed pride in Officer Bay’s response, stating, “She did a great job. She responded to the crisis and got the individual out of the building in a safe manner.” Carano also shared his gratitude, remarking, “It definitely could have been a lot worse.”

In a positive note for the community, both the storage building for Glass Tec and Corner Social itself were spared substantial damage, with the restaurant remaining open for business. Carano noted, “I’ve been here six years, and a little fire and pandemic isn’t gonna shut us down,” highlighting the resilience of the business.
