In Farmington Hills, a local entrepreneur with globally recognized hair styling skills is stepping up her game, bringing a boost of curl confidence to those living in the Detroit area. Julisa Anderson, aka the Hair Mistress, has been creating trendy hairstyles for many years. Now, she’s hoping to take this initiative to the next level by opening up a new natural hair salon named “Divine by Hair Mistress.”
Anderson firmly believes that “hair care is a great form of self-care“. That’s why this salon encourages everyone to embrace their natural hair and feel confident about it. With over 15 years of experience, Anderson has managed to redefine hair care in her own unique way, whether it’s in terms of the array of styling options she offers or the personal confidence she inspires in her clients.
Divine by Hair Mistress, one of the newest entrants to the metro Detroit’s salon scene, is expected to officially open next year. The salon will offer a variety of hairstyles, reflecting the evolving trends of Black hairstyles that Detroit is known for.
Anderson’s lead stylist, Shanetelle Johnson, has over a decade’s experience in cosmetology but is fairly new in the world of natural hair styling. In the last three years, Johnson has been mastering how to cut, texturize, and dye natural curls. The salon’s Instagram page showcases a wide range of styles ministered by the expert duo, from curly cuts to red french stitch braids, and even a luxurious ‘Sultry Silk Press’ which includes a wash and steam treatment.
The salon’s name, Divine, is a nod to Anderson’s favorite song, Lady by D’Angelo. Describing how they led to the salon’s name Anderson said, “While I was working on a client’s hair, she asked me what my favorite song was. When I told her, she started playing it and we began to look at the lyrics. That’s when it hit me, it’s nothing but divine timing that we’re here. So, Divine by Hair Mistress it was”.
Currently accepting appointments and walk-ins, the salon is eager for its grand opening slated for May 4, 2025. “It feels amazing to witness the love pouring in from our clients every time they come in and notice the little changes we’ve made,” expressed Anderson. Until the grand opening, Anderson hopes that the salon will be a space for joy, relaxation, and camaraderie, just like the good old ’90s vibe.
