South Lyon City Council Approves New HVAC and Boardwalk Projects
The South Lyon City Council took significant steps forward during their Monday meeting by approving the installation of new HVAC equipment at the Historic Village and planning maintenance work on the boardwalk near Michigan Seamless Tube.
In a generous move, Heinanen Engineering, a local company, is donating two furnaces and two air conditioning units for the freight house and museum within the Historic Village. The city manager, Paul Zelenak, presented this proposal during the meeting.
According to the proposal, Heinanen Engineering will also handle the installation of the units, which comes at a cost of $33,870.23, while the equipment itself is valued at $11,841.10.
Zelenak requested the council to waive the usual bidding requirement to move forward with the installation. This was necessary because the donation from Heinanen covered only the units and not the installation.
The formal motion to accept the donated HVAC units will take place after the items are ordered and when a date for installation has been confirmed.
In addition to the HVAC updates, the city has requested bids for approximately 450 feet of new boardwalk south of Michigan Seamless Tube. Zelenak recommended going with the lowest bid from LJ Construction of Clifford, Michigan, which came in at $538,311.
“The metal bridge between the two sections of the boardwalk will be evaluated by the contractor on site to assess repair needs, helping to extend its lifespan,” stated Zelenak.
The bulk of the funds for these projects will be sourced from the remaining ARPA funds, which were allocated to assist communities in overcoming long-term challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Around $100,000 will be covered by the general fund.
Construction is expected to kick off after December 1st, with the potential for work to resume in spring if weather conditions allow. The projected completion date will either be in mid-April or it could extend into late 2024.
All three motions regarding the HVAC installation and the boardwalk were passed unanimously by the council.
