Traffic Alert: Live Wire Closes I-96 at Milford, Wixom Roads
In an unexpected start to the day in Detroit, both eastbound and westbound lanes of Interstate 96, between Milford and Wixom roads, were closed due to a live wire that had fallen across all lanes of the freeway on Friday morning.
Rush hour commuters found themselves detoured as the report of the closure first came in at 7:10 a.m. Apparently, a crane involved in a construction zone managed to inadvertently bring the wire down. This left both motorists and residents in the vicinity without power.
A sigh of relief was breathed when the Michigan Department of Transportation confirmed around 9 in the morning that DTE had arrived on the scene and successfully deactivated the power line, ensuring the safety of all involved.
Crews are now diligently working to clear the wire, starting with westbound lanes of the freeway. Simultaneously, they’re also striving to restore power to customers impacted by the power line disruption. It is expected that power should be back around 11 a.m. and the freeway completely open by noon.
Travelers on eastbound I-96 are being directed to take Grand River Avenue East to reach Wixom Road North. Conversely, westbound commuters are being advised to hit westbound Grand River Avenue to get to Kent Lake.
As we stay on top of this developing story, it’s a good reminder to everyone on the road to stay aware, be patient, and always prioritize safety.
