NORTHVILLE, Mich. — Electric customers in Northville have a stake in a fight playing out before state regulators, where Oakland County is pressing to block or sharply trim the 9.7% average residential increase DTE Electric wants.

In a brief filed Tuesday, Oct. 27, with the Michigan Public Service Commission, the county argued that any net increase should be capped at 3.7%, the rate of inflation. It also wants DTE to disclose each year how much customer bills actually change and to review accounts so households and businesses can be moved to a cheaper plan when one fits.

The utility is seeking $474.3 million in additional annual revenue and says the money would pay for grid and generation work. The county estimates the request would cost Oakland County residential customers about $76 million a year.

County officials collected more than 1,250 resident bills in under a week this fall. Their review found the net effective increase from the last rate decision was at least 13%, far above the 4.6% regulators approved. The county also found $13,000 a year in savings on its own commercial accounts by switching rates.

DTE is the main electric and natural gas utility for Northville and the surrounding area. The proposed rates have not been approved, and a final commission decision is expected in February 2027.
