NORTHVILLE, Mich. — The Northville Mustangs built a three-touchdown cushion before halftime Friday night and then held on for a 28-19 home win over Brownstown Woodhaven in the first round of the MHSAA Division 1 football playoffs.
The two teams arrived with matching 7-2 records. Northville scored three straight touchdowns to go up 21-0 late in the second quarter, and its defense kept Woodhaven out of the end zone on a goal-line stand as the half ran out.
Woodhaven made a game of it after the break. The Warriors recovered a fumble on the second-half kickoff, cashed it in with a touchdown pass and later stopped a Mustangs fake punt to pull within one score. Northville answered with its only touchdown of the second half, and a late Woodhaven rushing score was not enough.
The victory was the fifth straight playoff appearance for the Mustangs, who play in the Kensington Lakes Activities Association. Woodhaven finished 7-3.
Northville (8-2) now moves on to a district championship game against No. 4-ranked Saline, which is 10-0. That game is set for Friday, Nov. 6, at Saline.
