Northville MI Politics & Civic News — Page 9
Covering Northville City Council, Wayne County Council, Michigan Legislature, and your federal representatives in Washington, D.C. Accountability journalism for Wayne County residents.
Wayne County sits inside one of the most layered governmental structures in the region. Residents answer to at least five levels of elected authority simultaneously: the federal government, statewide offices, Wayne County Council, Northville City Council, and school district boards — each a separately elected body covering its own geographic slice of the county.
Wayne’s federal delegation includes US Rep. Debbie Dingell (MI District 6) and Senators Gary C. Peters and Elissa Slotkin.
Wayne County Council controls property tax millage, land-use zoning outside city limits, and fee-in-lieu-of-tax agreements. Downtown zoning decisions and the Northville Police Department budget run through Northville City Council. State funding for schools, roads, and Medicaid flows from the Michigan Legislature. The Wayne County Elections and Voter Registration Office administers local balloting under MI Election Commission oversight.
HERENorthville covers Wayne County Council meetings, Northville City Council sessions, Michigan Legislature session, federal delegation votes and town halls, school board meetings, and candidate filing windows. We also pull FOIA-sourced travel records and contracts at both the city and county level. If it shapes how Wayne County is governed, it’s HERE.

Politics of Data: Who Decides on Data Centers Near Northville
Northville sits between three of metro Detroit's biggest data-center decisions: Project Flex in Lyon Township to the northwest, Google's campus in Van Buren Township to the southwest, and the Washtenaw County votes to the west.
Nearby: In Lyon Township, Project Flex, a proposed 1.8 million-square-foot data center on 172 acres, is back before the Planning Commission after a sixth site plan, while the township's moratorium on new applications does not cover it. In Van Buren Township, Google's 1-gigawatt campus has final site plan approval.
Ohio spillover watch: On Nov. 3, 2026, Ohio voters in 18 municipalities decided 21 local data-center measures, more than half of the 41 on ballots nationwide, and every Ohio result went against new data-center development, from outright bans to voter-approval and financial-guarantee rules. With that many Ohio doors closing at once, developers hunting for power, land, and water are expected to look harder at southeast Michigan and the I-94 and I-96 corridors, which is why the decisions below matter here.
Full metro breakdown: See the Ann Arbor Politics of Data section for the Augusta Township vote, the Saline Township power contracts, and the full pro and con briefing.
Who decides: boards, utilities, and regulators
- City of Northville
- Lyon Charter Township (Board of Trustees and Planning Commission)
- Van Buren Charter Township (Board of Trustees and Planning Commission)
- DTE Energy (regional electric utility)
- Michigan Public Service Commission (utility contracts and rates)
The case for data centers
State regulators say the Saline Township power contracts carry some of the strongest consumer protections in the country and project about $300 million a year in savings for other DTE customers, with the largest users first in line to be cut during grid emergencies. Supporters argue that model lets Michigan host big campuses without shifting the bill to households.
Official referenceThe case against
The Attorney General argues the commission approved the Saline contracts without a contested case, that the contracts remain heavily redacted, and that claims of no rate impact have not been tested. That appeal is pending, so the question of who pays if a campus underuses its power or leaves early is still open.
